Urgent: New Bridge Plan Announced for Towyn Beach Access

UPDATE: Plans for a new footbridge linking the seaside resort of Towyn to its beach have just been announced. This critical development aims to enhance safety as the North Wales Main Line is set to increase train services by 50%, with trains speeding past at up to 80 mph.

Currently, access to the beach is limited to two level crossings, Ty Gwyn and Pen Uchaf, which pose significant safety risks to the community, especially for children and vulnerable users. In response to these concerns, Network Rail and Transport for Wales have proposed the construction of a new footbridge to ensure safe passage over the railway.

The official application has been submitted to Conwy council following an extensive consultation process last year. Authorities have emphasized the need for this bridge to prevent accidents as rail traffic increases. A representative from Network Rail stated,

“Both crossings currently present a significant safety risk due to their high levels of use. With the planned increase in services, the risk at these crossings becomes unacceptable.”

The proposed footbridge will be located near the Ty Gwyn caravan park and has been designed with community feedback in mind. Adjustments have been made to its location and design to minimize the impact on local properties and the environment. The new structure aims to comply with Active Travel standards, ensuring that it is accessible for all users.

History underscores the importance of this project; the railway was originally authorized by the Chester & Holyhead Railway Act of 1844, which grants Network Rail the authority to undertake such developments. Despite the project falling under permitted development, the local authority’s approval is still needed for its siting and appearance.

Network Rail reassured the public that this initiative will enhance accessibility to the railway and surrounding areas. They are committed to creating a safe and inclusive route while safeguarding neighborhood amenity. “The scheme cannot reasonably be located elsewhere,” they stated, emphasizing its necessity for the community.

With the increasing railway services, the urgency for this project cannot be understated. The new footbridge is expected to not only improve safety but also promote better access to the beach, encouraging tourism and community engagement.

Authorities are urging residents to stay informed as the situation develops, and they are encouraged to join the North Wales Live community for real-time updates. This bridge is not just a structure; it represents a vital connection for the community of Towyn, making access to the beach safer and more reliable.

As planning moves forward, the public is invited to voice their opinions and stay engaged in the decision-making process. The proposed footbridge embodies a significant step towards a safer, more accessible community for all.
