UPDATE: The community in Kilkeel is mourning the tragic loss of 11-year-old John Doole, who was laid to rest today following a devastating road accident on July 11, 2023. Mourners gathered at Mourne Presbyterian Church to celebrate John’s short yet impactful life, which “touched the hearts of many.”
During the emotional service, Rev William Bingham remembered John as a “happy, content, thoughtful, gentle and kind wee boy.” He emphasized the profound impact John had on his family and friends, stating, “John made his mark in life in a good and positive way.” The heartfelt tributes underscored the connection John forged within his community, with classmates sharing their cherished memories.
John’s parents, Wesley and Theresa, expressed deep gratitude for the support from emergency services and medical personnel who attended the scene of the accident. Rev Bingham highlighted this in his address, saying, “Wesley and Theresa have asked me to particularly thank the emergency services, Daisy Hill Hospital, and the police who attended the scene and provided support throughout Tuesday.”
As friends and family gathered, Rev Bingham read touching messages from John’s classmates and teachers, who described him as someone everyone loved. “Everyone who met John fell in love with him,” one tribute stated. Another classmate recalled, “He was always smiling even when he was being told to get on with his work.”
John was set to transition from Kilkeel Primary School to Kilkeel High School this September, and Rev Bingham noted, “I can honestly say his short life has left a lasting impact among teachers and pupils alike.”
The deep sorrow felt by his family and friends was palpable throughout the service. Rev Bingham spoke directly to John’s family, affirming, “They have every right to be proud of their wee man. John has been a gift to them from God.” He offered comfort with the hope of reunion, saying, “As God takes him back to Himself, we are comforted with the hope that when we love Jesus, we never say goodbye for the last time.”
Among those who attended was South Down MLA Diane Forsythe, who expressed her condolences, stating, “United in enormous grief today, we joined to give thanks for the precious life of John and the joy he brought to all who knew and loved him.” She emphasized the importance of support during this difficult time, saying, “My continued thoughts and prayers are with Wesley, Theresa, and the entire family circle.”
The community’s love and support for the Doole family were evident as they remembered John—a “beautiful wee angel,” according to Forsythe—who will forever remain in their hearts. As the family navigates this immeasurable loss, they are surrounded by a network of love, ensuring that John’s legacy will continue to shine brightly in the days to come.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the deep connections we share with one another. John Doole’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him, a testament to the joy he brought in his too-short time on earth.
