A primary school in Walsall has made history by becoming the first institution in the West Midlands to receive an ‘exceptional’ rating from Ofsted under its new inspection framework. This significant achievement comes as Ofsted implements a revamped evaluation system designed to provide a more comprehensive overview of school performance.
The education watchdog has moved away from its previous one-word ratings, such as “outstanding” or “inadequate,” in favor of a broader grading system. This change aims to create a more equitable assessment of schools, allowing parents to gain a clearer understanding of educational quality.
Goldsmith Primary Academy has set a precedent by earning the top grade in three key areas: inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing. Additionally, the school received a strong standard rating for achievement, attendance and behavior, curriculum and teaching, as well as early years education.
According to Ofsted’s report, following a visit in November 2023, the inspectors noted, “Leaders have an astute and precise understanding of the school’s strengths and priorities.” They highlighted the school’s culture of “exceptionally high aspiration” that positively impacts every student.
The report further emphasized the school’s commitment to dismantling barriers faced by disadvantaged pupils, stating that their efforts have led to transformative improvements in academic performance, attendance rates, and overall wellbeing.
The Ofsted team also praised the school’s personal development program, describing it as one that “transforms pupils’ character and raises their aspirations.” The ethos of Goldsmith Primary Academy places student wellbeing at its core, ensuring that pupils feel well-supported while actively participating in an inclusive school culture.
With this outstanding recognition, Goldsmith Primary Academy serves as a model for educational excellence and inclusivity in the region. The school’s achievements reflect a commitment to fostering a nurturing environment where every student can thrive.
