A healthy baby boy was born on the night of March 15, 2024, in the emergency medical facility in Kolasin, marking a significant moment for the town. This delivery is particularly noteworthy as it is the first birth in Kolasin in over a decade, following the closure of the local maternity ward.
The mother, a resident of Kolasin, began experiencing labor pains a few days before her due date. Initially, she intended to travel to Podgorica for the delivery. However, circumstances changed, and it became clear that she would not reach the capital in time. The family quickly returned to the emergency medical facility, where a swift and successful delivery was organized.
Led by Dr. Lazar Dragisic, the medical team included technicians Tine Stanisic, Mihailo Scekic, and Slavko Radevic. They ensured that the delivery proceeded smoothly. Dr. Dragisic highlighted the team’s efficient response, emphasizing the importance of both the mother and baby’s wellbeing.
“We reacted quickly and professionally, and the most important thing is that both mother and baby are well. It was a natural birth. We are here to meet the needs of the citizens and provide safety, while also allowing nature to take its course,” he stated.
Dr. Dragisic praised his colleagues for their responsibility and professionalism. “The mother was remarkably brave. She had trust in us, which we confirmed with our shared glances and silence. We knew this was one of the most important moments in her life. It reminded us that there is no greater honor than being present and providing expert assistance when new life begins,” he added.
This boy’s birth is significant not only for his family but also for the community, as it revives the tradition of local births. In recent years, expectant mothers from Kolasin have typically given birth in Podgorica, Bijelo Polje, or Berane due to the absence of a functioning maternity ward in their hometown.
In May 2024, the emergency medical facility in Kolasin underwent renovations, costing over €36,000. These improvements included the installation of complete delivery equipment, which contributed to the successful birth and provided additional confidence during the procedure.
With this event, Kolasin has once again embraced the joy of local births, bringing hope and vitality back to the community.
