UPDATE: Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has just confirmed that 10 new Elizabeth line trains will begin service this year, significantly enhancing London’s transport infrastructure. This announcement comes as Transport for London (TfL) anticipates a surge in passenger numbers, particularly once the HS2 link to Old Oak Common opens.
The first of the new Class 345 Aventra trains, currently under construction in Derby, will hit the tracks this year, with the full fleet expected to be operational by 2027. The Elizabeth line already accounts for one in six rail journeys in the UK, and officials predict even greater demand as the new link becomes operational.
Responding to a query from Labour Assembly Member Anne Clarke, Khan emphasized the complexity of developing a new timetable. He noted that TfL is collaborating closely with Network Rail and Heathrow Airport to ensure smooth integration of the new services.
The business case for these additional trains, which secured over £220 million in government funding, demonstrated strong value for money, according to Khan. Recent research indicated that the Elizabeth line has already added approximately 71,000 extra public transport trips in London each weekday, highlighting its significant impact on commuting patterns.
The line has transformed transport in areas like Abbey Wood, where an estimated 16 percent of trips now occur due to the Elizabeth line. Journey times from Abbey Wood to Central London have been slashed from 40 minutes to just 20 minutes, and trips to Canary Wharf have been halved.
Last week, transport options in Abbey Wood expanded further with the launch of the SL11 Superloop bus route, and plans are underway for a DLR extension to Thamesmead from Gallions Reach, enhancing connectivity across the region.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander praised the investment, calling it a “shining example” of how public spending on railways can support communities and create skilled jobs. She reiterated the government’s commitment to a modern and sustainable railway system that fosters economic growth and accessibility.
As the rollout of these new trains unfolds, Londoners can expect improved service and increased capacity on one of the capital’s busiest transport lines. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
