Sports Broadcasting Pioneer Geoffrey Mason Passes Away at 85

Geoffrey Mason, a prominent figure in sports television and a member of the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame, passed away on March 10, 2024, at the age of 85. Mason’s extensive career, which spanned five decades, included influential roles at major networks such as ABC Sports, ESPN, NBC, Fox, and the NFL Network. His work significantly shaped the way sports are presented on television.

Throughout his career, Mason garnered an impressive 24 Emmy Awards, a testament to his exceptional contributions to the industry. In recognition of his achievements, he was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2010. Reflecting on Mason’s impact, Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, stated, “Geoff Mason was a friend and a colleague who had a storied career, touching just about every corner of the sports television industry. He had a passion for the business, which was evidenced in his prodigious work ethic and the constant love and enthusiasm he exhibited on everything he worked on. He most certainly will be missed.”

Mason’s career included notable highlights such as serving as the coordinating producer for ABC’s coverage of the tragic terrorist attack during the 1972 Olympics in Munich. He participated in eight Olympic assignments and contributed to the production of various major sporting events, including the Super Bowl, the World Series, the World Cup, “Monday Night Football,” and prestigious tournaments in golf and tennis. His involvement extended to the Tour de France, the Indianapolis 500, horse racing’s Triple Crown, and sailing’s America’s Cup.

A graduate of Duke University and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, Mason began his journey in sports television as a production associate at ABC Sports in 1967. His commitment to philanthropy was evident through his long-term role as a board member of the V Foundation for Cancer Research, an organization he helped establish alongside renowned coach Jim Valvano. Additionally, he served on the board of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, advocating for addiction treatment and recovery.

Mason is survived by his wife, Chris; son, Geoff Jr.; and brother, David. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to influence the sports broadcasting landscape for years to come.
