URGENT UPDATE: Trearddur Bay FC is in turmoil as committee members face “unacceptable levels of abuse” following an alleged assault during last weekend’s match against Porthmadog. The incident, which occurred on January 17, 2023, has led to threats against club officials, prompting immediate concern.
Authorities report that a 35-year-old footballer was detained on suspicion of assault after the match in Porthmadog, Gwynedd. He has since been released on bail while police investigations proceed, and no charges have been filed as of now. In response, the club has taken decisive action, parting ways with the player involved and expressing deep regret towards the opposing player affected by the incident.
The situation escalated when Trearddur Bay FC announced via social media that multiple committee members have received threatening messages. The club stated, “As you can imagine, the past few days have been extremely challenging for Trearddur Bay Football Club,” and confirmed that these threats have been reported to the relevant authorities.
Adding to the turmoil, club secretary Chris Davies announced his resignation following a barrage of “countless vile messages” directed at him and his family. He clarified on social media, “This decision has nothing to do with what happened on the pitch on Saturday, nor the countless vile messages aimed at myself and my family since.”
Davies, who has dedicated over three decades to the club, emphasized that his departure was a long time coming and not a reaction to the recent events. He reassured supporters, stating, “The club is not folding, and there are no issues with club personnel.”
In light of the incident, Trearddur Bay FC consulted with the Football Association of Wales and postponed their upcoming fixtures, including a match against Llanrwst United, originally scheduled for January 20. The club cited essential pitch maintenance as a contributing factor, stating that their home ground in Bangor was unavailable.
With the Welsh Cup Quarter Final against Flint Town United on the horizon, Trearddur Bay FC is urging fans to continue their support during this challenging period. The club expressed gratitude to those backing the players, management, and committee with the hope of moving forward both on and off the field.
As this situation develops, the safety of club officials remains a top priority, and further updates are expected as police inquiries continue.
