Students Explore Career Paths at Vodafone’s Apprenticeship Day

More than 120 students from schools across West Berkshire participated in an apprenticeship insight and assessment day at Vodafone’s headquarters in Newbury on January 14, 2024. This annual event provided pupils with an in-depth understanding of what a career at Vodafone entails, showcasing the company’s commitment to fostering early career opportunities.

Students from St Bart’s, Trinity, Park House, and St Gabriel’s schools were invited to experience a mock assessment day designed to mirror the genuine apprenticeship application process. The day included various interactive activities aimed at equipping students with essential skills for their future careers.

During the event, pupils received valuable career insights from Adam Hyde, Vodafone’s business technology director. Hyde, who began his career as an apprentice in 1995, shared his personal journey and advice with the students. “I feel privileged to share my journey and experience with these aspirational students,” he stated. “Today reflects Vodafone’s culture and commitment to early careers.”

The event was conceptualized by two Vodafone apprentices, Charlie Thomas and Jake Randall, who launched the initiative in 2023 with just 20 students. Now expanded to accommodate 120 participants, the mock assessment day has garnered support from 79 colleagues, many of whom are current or former apprentices eager to give back. Randall emphasized the importance of the program, saying, “It’s an inspiring opportunity to give back to those in the position we were in only a few years ago.”

The packed agenda featured four main activities: a one-on-one behavioral interview, a group presentation task, a cognitive group exercise focusing on communication and problem-solving, and a Q&A session with a panel of past and present apprentices.

James Wilder, Head of Sixth Form at St Bart’s, noted the growing interest in apprenticeships among students. “This is often a highly competitive route, and it is fantastic when local employers can offer their time to support our young people,” he said. He further highlighted the program’s impact, referencing an alumnus, Owen Chetwood, who participated in an earlier masterclass and is now working at Vodafone’s headquarters.

Looking ahead, Vodafone plans to offer apprenticeship opportunities in February, including roles in field engineering, data analytics, and network engineering.

Students expressed enthusiasm about the day’s events. Paritosh Madduru from Trinity remarked, “Today was engaging and vibrant, involving activities required in the real working environment.” Fellow student Danio Page added, “Today was really informative and helped me with next steps for the future.”

This initiative not only serves as a platform for young people to explore career options but also highlights Vodafone’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of talent through its apprenticeship programs.
