UPDATE: A house fire in Bessbrook, Newry, has led police to uncover a substantial cannabis factory. The blaze erupted on January 18, 2026, shortly before 4:30 PM, prompting a swift response from emergency services.
Firefighters from Newry, Banbridge, and Warrenpoint were on the scene, and during their operation, they discovered a significant amount of cannabis and paraphernalia within the property. As they battled the fire, some neighboring residents were evacuated as a precaution.
According to Inspector Walker of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, “Officers attended the scene, along with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, who extinguished the fire and advised police there was a substantial amount of cannabis and associated paraphernalia within the property.” Thankfully, there were no injuries reported, and no one was present in the house at the time.
The incident took place on Thomas Street, where firefighters confirmed that the fire was accidental and originated from the upstairs area of the residence. Eyewitnesses reported seeing several cannabis plants in the living room that remained unaffected by the fire.
Northern Ireland Electricity arrived later in the evening to isolate the electric supply, and forensic teams are expected to investigate the scene further over the next few hours.
Inspector Walker reassured the community, stating, “There was no ongoing risk to the public from the fire and that the scene was subsequently made safe.” The investigation into the incident is ongoing, but authorities do not currently suspect foul play.
