UPDATE: Shropshire towns are being called to action as the opportunity to become the UK Town of Culture 2028 has just been announced. Shropshire Council is urging all town councils to express their interest by January 30, 2024, following the government’s launch of the initiative earlier this week.
This is a critical moment for local communities to showcase their cultural vibrancy and enhance tourism, investment, and community pride. Rob Wilson, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for economic growth, emphasized the importance of this opportunity, stating, “This is a fantastic chance to showcase the cultural vibrancy of your town. Importantly, if any town in Shropshire is successful, the benefits will extend across the whole county.”
Towns across the UK are invited to submit expressions of interest by March 31, 2024. Wilson’s letter to town clerks highlights the need for local partnerships when submitting bids, which must include local councils. Shropshire Council has indicated that while it cannot support every town’s bid, it will back the one deemed most likely to succeed if multiple towns apply.
In a further push for collaboration, Cllr Heather Kidd, Leader of Shropshire Council, will chair a panel that evaluates the bids if more than one town expresses interest. Wilson added, “This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Shropshire’s rich culture and heritage. We look forward to hearing from town councils in our area and working together to make the most of this chance.”
The call to action is urgent. Town clerks are asked to notify Shropshire Council of their intentions by January 30. This initiative not only highlights local culture but also aims to foster a sense of community and pride among the residents.
With the deadline approaching, towns are encouraged to rally their communities and submit their interest for this prestigious title. The potential benefits of winning this designation could be transformative for Shropshire, making this an essential moment for local leaders and residents alike.
Stay tuned for more updates as Shropshire towns respond to this exciting opportunity!
