A semi-private snug on the mezzanine overlooks the vibrant main seating area, providing an intimate setting. For those seeking fresh air, a large covered terrace will open in the summer, allowing an additional 20 guests to soak in the views of the ancient woodland surrounding the farmhouse.
Owners Oli Brown and Ruth Leigh have crafted Bar Vita as a “love letter” to Rome. They state, “It’s got the glamour of Harry’s with the charm of Bar San Callisto, both in Rome, and an atmosphere that makes it open to all, from hotel guests to those just popping in for a drink.” Their vision aims to merge the vibrant Roman atmosphere with inventive cocktails and bar snacks, which they believe will captivate visitors.
The couple has dedicated the past few years to restoring Updown Farmhouse, transforming it into a luxury venue. Oli, known for his work at Brixton’s Duck Duck Goose and in Hong Kong’s Swire Hotel, oversees the food offerings with expertise. Meanwhile, Ruth excels in front-of-house hospitality, ensuring every detail reflects their commitment to excellence.
In November 2023, Updown Farmhouse was recognized among the top 50 boutique hotels in the UK and was featured in the Michelin Guide for its culinary achievements. Food critic William Sitwell praised the couple in the Telegraph, stating, “They will go down in history as one of the great marital duos of British restaurants.”
