Liverpool Fan Banned for Three Years Over Tragedy Chants

UPDATE: A Liverpool fan has been banned from attending football matches for three years after making offensive tragedy chants during a match against Leeds United. Nicholas Harpur, 23, from Flint Lane, Melling, appeared in Leeds Magistrates’ Court on January 5, 2026, where he pleaded guilty to a public order offence stemming from the December 6, 2025, fixture.

The incident occurred as officers were controlling the away fans’ coach park following the match. Shouting and chanting erupted between supporters, with Harpur heard making inappropriate comments referencing the tragic deaths of two Leeds United fans in Istanbul.

He received an £800 fine and was ordered to pay a £320 victim surcharge along with £85 in costs. The court’s decision marks a significant step in addressing unacceptable behavior in football.

Chief Inspector Pete Hall, the match commander, condemned the actions, stating, “The vast majority of fans don’t want to see this type of behaviour which is highly offensive and can cause genuine distress to those affected by the incidents that these tragedy chants refer to.” He emphasized that such actions have “no place in football” and assured that authorities will work closely with clubs to investigate offenses and enforce banning orders.

The ruling serves as a stark reminder of the need for respect among fans and reinforces the commitment to maintaining a safe and enjoyable atmosphere at football matches.
