Whitchurch Man Jailed for 23 Months for Domestic Abuse

UPDATE: A Whitchurch man has been sentenced to 23 months in prison for a series of domestic abuse offenses, including controlling and coercive behavior against his former partner. The case, heard at Shrewsbury Crown Court on Tuesday, revealed shocking details of how William Varey, 46, took over his victim’s homeless accommodation upon his release from prison.

On August 26, 2022, Varey was released and immediately sought out his victim at a tanning salon she frequented, professing his love before moving into her home in Oswestry. According to prosecutor Rosemary Proctor, Varey took the woman’s keys, effectively trapping her inside and preventing her from seeing her domestic abuse support worker.

During this harrowing period, the victim’s behavior changed dramatically, prompting concern from her sister and advisor, who noted she became increasingly “nervous.” On September 11, 2022, during a video call with her sister, the victim reported having locked Varey out of the property. However, when she attempted to walk her dog, Varey confronted her, leading to a violent altercation where she cried out, “Get off me William, you are hurting me!”

The court heard disturbing accounts of Varey snatching the victim’s phone and breaking it, as well as physically assaulting her to steal her belongings, including a ring and bracelet. Following the incident, police were called, and Varey was arrested.

Varey pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including controlling and coercive behavior, theft, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and criminal damage. Judge Deni Mathews condemned Varey’s actions, highlighting the severe impact on the victim, who had been working towards overcoming her alcohol issues.

Judge Mathews stated, “You in effect imposed yourself in her home. You took away her door key so she could not get out of the property.” He emphasized that Varey’s controlling actions severely undermined her progress, resulting in significant distress.

In addition to the prison sentence, a restraining order was imposed, prohibiting Varey from contacting his victim. This ruling aims to protect her and prevent further abuse.

This case sheds light on the ongoing struggles faced by victims of domestic violence, particularly those in vulnerable situations. As awareness grows, officials urge communities to remain vigilant and supportive of those affected by domestic abuse.
