Man Drops 21 Stone in 19 Months, Ditches Takeaways for Good

Jon Parry, a 53-year-old martial arts instructor from Wrawby, Lincolnshire, has achieved a remarkable transformation by losing over 21 stone in just 19 months, all without resorting to weight loss injections. Weighing in at an alarming 45 stone in September 2023, Parry realized significant lifestyle changes were necessary to improve his health and well-being.

Prior to his weight loss journey, Parry indulged in takeaways three times a week, spending between £15 and £20 per meal, which amounted to around £180 monthly. His diet primarily consisted of fast food options like pizza and Chinese takeaways, leading him to gain weight and struggle with his self-image. Parry attributed much of his weight gain to a lifelong battle with obesity, worsened by the grief of losing his father, John.

In November 2023, after reaching his peak weight, Parry decided to join a local Slimming World group. He described this as a pivotal moment in his life, stating, “I knew something needed to change.” The support from fellow members and the structured program helped him break the cycle of unhealthy eating habits.

Transformative Journey

Parry’s weight-loss strategy focuses on sustainable changes rather than quick fixes. He adopted a diet rich in fish and vegetables while eliminating takeaways. Since December 2024, he has only ordered one takeaway, which he estimates has saved him over £2,000 that he plans to use for a holiday to Spain with his 82-year-old mother, Sylvia, set for January 5, 2025.

He now adheres to a balanced meal plan, which includes meals from Slimming World, such as prawn linguine and healthy curry sauces. Parry’s new breakfast consists of oats and fruit, while his lunches include salmon and lean meats. He emphasizes the importance of portion control and regular exercise, hitting the gym five times a week to complement his dietary changes.

Parry reflected on his past eating habits, stating, “I was having massive portions and used to order takeaways three or four times a week. It would always be fried foods, pastries, desserts, and chocolates.” He describes the transition to healthier eating as liberating, allowing him to not only feel better physically but also gain confidence.

Looking Ahead

As of now, Parry weighs 23 stone 6 lbs and wears a size 3XL. His goal is to lose an additional six stone, ultimately aiming to become fit enough to hike Snowdonia. He proudly shares, “I have got loads more energy and can walk miles and miles. Before, I could barely walk around a supermarket or up and down a flight of stairs.”
