A prominent educator and beloved figure at Campbell College, Hubert John McKinney, passed away after a brief battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of dedication spanning over 43 years. His contributions to education, sports, and the college community have made a significant impact on countless students and staff members.

McKinney, who joined Campbell College in 1980, is remembered not only for his commitment to his students but also for his involvement in various extracurricular activities, particularly in rugby and athletics. The college’s official statement expressed deep sorrow over his passing, highlighting how McKinney’s “commitment, character and steady influence touched every part of College life.” His long tenure at the college allowed him to foster close ties with generations of pupils, making him a reassuring presence in their lives.

His daughter, Rebecca McKinney, a presenter on Cool FM, shared her heartbreak on social media, stating: “Our hearts are broken forever. Last night our one of a kind Dad passed away peacefully at home; after a devastatingly short battle with cancer.” She reflected on his role as a guiding force in her life, calling him “the best man I ever knew” and expressing how the world will be a lesser place without him.

McKinney’s influence extended far beyond the classroom. As the 1st XV Coach and later the Master in Charge of Rugby, he played a crucial role in shaping the college’s rugby program, leading the team to four Schools’ Cup victories. He was known for his high standards and personal encouragement, helping many students achieve provincial and international honors.

A Multifaceted Contributor to College Life

In addition to his rugby coaching, McKinney dedicated over 27 years to the College Athletics Club, becoming a familiar face at track events. His passion for athletics was evident, as he meticulously timed races and encouraged athletes of all abilities. His commitment to the arts was equally notable; McKinney was the longest-serving member of the college choir, participating for a full 43 years.

Throughout his career, McKinney held various influential roles, including Head of Boarding, Head of Physical Education, Senior Teacher, Staff Governor, and Chairman of the Common Room. He was well-regarded for his unwavering loyalty to Campbell College and his ability to connect with students. Described as impeccably dressed and possessing a distinctive presence, he was admired for his dry humor and engaging personality.

Tributes from the wider community also emphasized McKinney’s contributions. Belfast Harlequins RFC expressed their condolences, stating: “We are extremely saddened to hear of the passing of John McKinney… inspiring many top internationals across rugby union within Ulster and Ireland.” The club acknowledged his longstanding involvement in the sport and the profound impact he had on young players.

As the community mourns his loss, arrangements for a funeral service are underway. The celebration of McKinney’s life will take place at College Central Hall on January 2, 2024, at 10:00 AM.
