A community Christmas lunch brought together twenty-four people on December 25, 2023, at the Dornoch Firth Church of Scotland’s hall, known as An Tobar, in Ardgay. This festive gathering was made possible through funding from the Rotary Club of Tain and Easter Ross and was prepared and served by dedicated members of the church community.
Guests attending the lunch came from various backgrounds, including one individual from Australia, who was in Scotland to research his family ancestry. The event created a warm atmosphere, welcoming those who may have otherwise spent Christmas Day alone or were facing challenging circumstances.
Community Effort for a Memorable Celebration
The preparations for the meal were led by Neil Graham, Valerie Graham, and church elder Christine Mackay. They ensured that attendees enjoyed a four-course lunch in a relaxed environment. The revitalized church hall, which had recently returned to the Dornoch Firth Parish after a sale fell through, served as the perfect backdrop for this joyful occasion.
Rev Carol Anne Porter, the minister of Dornoch Firth Church, expressed her heartfelt sentiments about the gathering. She stated, “There is nowhere else I would rather have been on Christmas Day. The food was wonderful for one thing and so was the company.”
Rev Porter emphasized the broader meaning of family during the holidays, noting, “It really broadens the definition of spending time with ‘family’ at Christmas. I felt I was with my family, sitting at the table with good and caring folk. It just felt like Christmas to me and how Christmas should be.”
A Tradition of Togetherness
The annual lunch at An Tobar exemplifies the community’s commitment to inclusivity and support. By bringing together individuals from different walks of life, the event fosters a sense of belonging and connection, particularly during a time that can be difficult for many.
The collaborative effort of the church and the Rotary Club highlights the importance of community spirit, especially during festive periods. This gathering not only provided nourishment but also created an opportunity for companionship, reflecting the true essence of Christmas.
With its focus on community and inclusivity, the Dornoch Firth Church of Scotland’s Christmas lunch has become a cherished tradition. As people continue to gather in this spirit of togetherness, the event stands as a testament to the power of kindness and generosity, bringing joy to all involved.
