Coles Launches Hot Cross Buns One Day After Christmas

Coles has introduced its popular hot cross buns just one day after Christmas, igniting a mixed response from shoppers. The supermarket announced that the Easter-themed buns will hit the shelves starting December 26, 2025, with expectations of selling over two million units by New Year’s Day.

Despite the early release, the initiative supports a charitable cause. Coles will donate 20 cents from every six or nine-pack sold to Redkite, an organization dedicated to assisting families affected by childhood cancer. The hot cross buns are priced at $4.50 for one pack or $8 for two, available both in-store and online. The range includes traditional flavors, as well as chocolate, apple and cinnamon, and mini fruit varieties. A notable addition is the Arnott’s Iced VoVo hot cross buns, which offer a unique take on the classic Australian biscuit.

The return of these buns has sparked debate among consumers. Some shoppers expressed excitement about the opportunity to enjoy the seasonal treat, while others voiced frustration over the early launch. Comments ranged from enthusiastic remarks like, “About time, I’ve been waiting since April for them to make a return,” to critical statements such as, “Christmas isn’t even over yet,” highlighting the divide in public opinion.

Support for Childhood Cancer

Coles General Manager of Commercial, Bakery, Dairy & Frozen, Brad Gorman, emphasized the meaningful impact of the early release. He stated, “Aussies have made hot cross buns a post-Christmas favourite, and we’re proud to turn that tradition into meaningful support for families who need to navigate the reality of childhood cancer.”

Over the past ten years, Coles customers and employees have raised more than $55 million for Redkite, providing essential services to families facing the challenges of childhood cancer. One such family is that of nine-year-old Dakoda, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia just days before her fourth birthday. After enduring intensive treatment, Dakoda is now in remission and enjoys a more typical childhood.

Dakoda’s mother, Michelle, shared her experience, stating, “Redkite has been a constant support, letting us focus on Dakoda’s health without worrying about everything else.” She highlighted the importance of the financial and emotional assistance provided by Redkite during their most challenging moments.

Long-standing Partnership with Redkite

The Chief Executive Officer of Redkite, Monique Keighery, praised the enduring partnership with Coles, noting its significance in providing necessary support to families like Dakoda’s. “For the past 12 years, Coles has been a loyal and generous partner, ensuring that families facing the realities of childhood cancer have access to the support they need during what can be one of the toughest times of their lives,” Keighery stated.

The funds raised through the sale of hot cross buns will support Redkite’s national family services, which include counseling for children and parents, financial assistance for essential items like groceries and fuel, and practical help for families navigating the complexities of childhood cancer.

Keighery added, “Every Coles hot cross bun sold helps us continue our vital support for families facing the overwhelming journey of childhood cancer, ensuring they feel supported and are not alone.” The campaign will run until January 1, 2026, as shoppers embrace the holiday spirit while contributing to a worthy cause.
