URGENT UPDATE: Tameside council has just announced an ambitious plan to transform Denton into a “greener, safer, and more vibrant town,” with nearly £17 million earmarked for improvement works set to begin before March 2026. This transformative initiative is funded through the council’s Levelling Up pot, supplemented by additional support from Transport for Greater Manchester.
The major overhaul aims to rejuvenate Denton by establishing safer travel routes, enhancing pedestrian access, and promoting green spaces. With the local authority emphasizing community feedback, the project reflects residents’ desires for improved transport links, youth facilities, and public safety measures.
Designed by Planit in collaboration with Civic, PLACED, Placemarque, SFP, and Tameside council, the masterplan delivers a balanced mix of immediate improvements and long-term enhancements. Key features include the introduction of approximately 1.1 kilometers (0.7 miles) of new pedestrian and cycling routes, alongside climate-resilient plantings on main thoroughfares like Queen Street.
Among the quick wins outlined, the plan proposes better connectivity between Civic Square and Victoria Park by relocating parking bays and adding rain gardens. Maintenance upgrades at Victoria Park will include updated heritage boards and community art displays to foster civic pride.
Furthermore, the town hall plans to modify Manchester Road with traffic-calming measures and redesigned junctions that prioritize pedestrian safety. Concepts for a new pocket park and extensions to Civic Square are also on the table, alongside a reimagining of Market Street and the transformation of Duke Street, Park Road, and Kynder Street into child-friendly school routes.
Deputy leader and executive member for growth, housing, and homelessness, Coun Andrew McLaren, stated, “The plans represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform Denton town centre. They reflect what residents told us they want, including better public spaces and improved transport links.”
The full vision for Denton will be gradually realized in phases by 2028, with the council actively pursuing additional funding to expand this ambitious project. As the groundwork begins, residents are set to witness substantial changes in their community, transforming Denton into a safer and more engaging place to live and work.
