Tensions escalated in Tirana, Albania, as protesters clashed with police outside the government building housing the office of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Demonstrators called for Rama’s resignation following corruption allegations against Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Baluku. The protests erupted on December 22, 2025, after the Special Prosecution Office, which focuses on combating corruption and organized crime, sought to lift Baluku’s parliamentary immunity to enable her arrest. The indictment accuses Baluku and several officials of misusing state funds to benefit specific companies involved in major infrastructure projects. These projects are valued at hundreds of millions of euros, raising concerns about accountability in the Albanian government.
In response to the unrest, protesters resorted to throwing Molotov cocktails at the government building. Despite the violence, riot police did not disperse the crowd, instead maintaining a defensive position to protect the building. One demonstrator, Arben Sulo, expressed frustration, stating, “We’ve had enough. We’re talking about tens and hundreds of millions of euros stolen, and she refuses to resign. This is shameful.”
Baluku, who also heads the Ministry of Infrastructure, has described the accusations as “slander, insinuations, half-truths, and lies.” She has vowed to cooperate fully with judicial authorities. Despite her assurances, the atmosphere remains charged as thousands of citizens, rallied by opposition parties, continue to voice their demands for accountability.
It remains uncertain when the Albanian Parliament will vote on the request to revoke Baluku’s immunity, especially given that Rama’s ruling party holds a majority. The situation reflects a growing discontent among the public regarding corruption and perceived mismanagement within the government.
