UPDATE: Snow could blanket the UK by the end of Christmas Day, as a powerful weather system from Russia sweeps in, bringing frigid temperatures and the potential for a white Christmas. Forecasts indicate that some regions may experience temperatures plunging to as low as -9C, which raises the possibility of sleet and snow, particularly in eastern areas.
Weather expert Nick Finnis from Netweather has confirmed that the latest models show a significant drop in temperatures, with a “southeasterly flow” developing. This flow could bring in cold air from Russia just in time for Christmas. Finnis stated, “Different weather models are converging on the idea of deep cold air over NW Russia being tapped into, leading to a strengthening easterly flow.”
According to the latest data, the GFS model indicates conditions cold enough for snow showers across northern regions, while the GEM and ICON models suggest snow could affect all parts of the UK by Christmas Day. However, the situation remains fluid, as high pressure positioned to the north of the UK could alter the expected weather patterns. Finnis cautions, “Slight differences can make a lot of difference in the depth of cold arriving from the east.”
Despite this potential for snow, the Met Office has stated that the chances of experiencing a white Christmas remain “extremely low.” Tom Morgan, an operational meteorologist at the Met Office, noted, “Next week, we’ll see a transition to much drier conditions as high pressure dominates the UK.”
The BBC Weather team also concurs, suggesting that a white Christmas is unlikely for most regions. Their forecast highlights the potential for temperatures to stabilize near the December average, with any snow confined primarily to higher elevations.
As we approach the festive season, many in the UK are hoping for a picturesque holiday filled with snow. However, it appears that only select areas might see a dusting, with drier conditions likely prevailing.
For now, the public should remain vigilant as weather forecasts evolve. The next few days will be critical in determining how these weather patterns develop leading into Christmas.
