Croatian Writer Ante Tomić Celebrates Humor as a Weapon Against Authority

Croatian journalist and author Ante Tomić showcased his creative work at the BOOKA Festival in Podgorica, Montenegro. The event, part of the 17th annual festival dedicated to books and writers, provided a platform for Tomić to discuss the power of humor as a formidable tool against authority, dogma, and dictatorship.

During his presentation, Tomić emphasized that laughter serves as one of the strongest weapons in the face of oppression. He remarked, “Humor and satire have the ability to dismantle fear and rigidity, even in places where freedom seems lost.” Drawing from his experiences, he reflected on the influential role of the Feral Tribune, a Croatian publication renowned for its sharp satire during challenging political times.

Tomić described the publication as a powerful means to ridicule dictatorship. He recounted the bravery of its writers, saying, “We cannot overestimate its significance. The way they mocked the regime was remarkable. They were bold, cheeky, and unapologetic. Laughter wonderfully dismantles rigidity.” He stressed that humor is inherently subversive, always challenging dogma and authority. “Diplomats and dictators are typically serious; they lack a sense of humor,” he added, recalling how the Feral Tribune drove them to frustration.

In his view, the importance of humor is also evident in literature. Tomić cited works such as Umberto Eco’s “The Name of the Rose” and Milan Kundera’s “The Book of Laughter and Forgetting,” highlighting their exploration of laughter as a weapon of freedom.

Tomić further elaborated on the invaluable lessons journalism has imparted to him as a writer. He noted, “Journalism taught me speed and clarity. Everything must happen quickly. I write a piece today, it’s published tomorrow, and the day after, it’s no longer relevant.” He adheres to a strict principle in his journalistic endeavors: “I never write positively about the authorities. I write about various people who have ‘stolen’ our lives—ministers, generals…”

Through this candid discussion, Tomić underscored the indomitable spirit of creativity and the vital role of humor in confronting power. His insights resonate not only in Croatia but also across the globe, reminding audiences of the timeless value of laughter in the fight for freedom.

The conversation with Tomić was conducted by Aleksandar Ćuković, adding depth to the exploration of humor’s role in society. The event highlighted the enduring influence of literature and journalism in shaping public discourse, particularly in environments where freedom of expression faces challenges.
