Bovey Tracey is poised to develop a new primary school that will accommodate up to 420 pupils by 2029. This initiative is contingent upon securing the necessary funding for construction. The town’s mayor, Cllr Sheila Brooke, expressed optimism, stating, “We’re keeping everything crossed.”
The proposed school will be situated on land owned by Bovey Tracey Town Council, located off Le Molay-Littry Way. This facility aims to replace the existing, aging campus on Abbey Road, which currently serves 280 pupils. The concept of a new school has been under discussion for some time, but recent developments indicate progress. Following funding from Teignbridge District Council, an initial feasibility study conducted by Devon County Council has taken place.
According to Teignbridge District Council, further surveys are now necessary to gather essential ecological insights and to provide a more accurate cost estimate for the project. A statement from the council clarified, “The completion of this initial feasibility design work does not act as a commitment by Teignbridge District Council and Devon County Council to fund nor deliver this project. However, you will be kept up to date on the progress of any such decision-making.”
Cllr Brooke emphasized that delivering a new school is a long-term endeavor. She noted, “If the surveys, design, permissions, and funding can be secured, delivery of a school may be possible by 2029.” The potential new facility would not only serve as an educational institution but would also provide outdoor amenities for the entire community, highlighting its importance to Bovey Tracey.
The mayor acknowledged the collaborative efforts of Teignbridge and Devon councils thus far, expressing hope for a successful outcome. “We thank Teignbridge and Devon for their efforts and hope we can secure the promise of a new school in advance of any changes that might come about as a result of the Local Government Review,” Cllr Brooke stated.
In terms of future developments, the site of the current school might be designated for an older people’s housing scheme. Cllr Brooke reiterated the town’s desire for this location to serve the community’s needs rather than those of commercial developers. “We are very keen to see it put to a use that meets Bovey’s needs and not those of a commercial developer. That’s a message we’ll repeat loud and clear for as long as it takes,” she affirmed.
The selected site for the new school lies opposite the entrance to De Tracey Park and is currently accessed via a track known as Bucks Lane. Known as the gateway to Dartmoor, Bovey Tracey continues to grow, making the development of educational facilities increasingly important for its residents.
