UPDATE: Renowned artist and designer Barbara Bjeliš has just unveiled her captivating photography exhibit, “Afterlight,” at the Gallery of the Cultural Center in Cetinje. This exhibit, opening today, showcases a visually rich photographic series that delves into themes of belonging, transience, and the relationship between body and landscape.
The “Afterlight” series is a culmination of Bjeliš’s years of experimentation with multiple exposures on a small analog camera, emphasizing the role of chance as a co-author in her work. The photographs create powerful visual dialogues that intertwine intimate human forms with the stunning landscapes of Durmitor, forging connections between the personal and the natural.
Bjeliš expressed her excitement about the exhibit, noting that her arrival in Cetinje was entirely unplanned but crucial for the project’s realization.
“I found myself in Cetinje by some twist of fate. We were traveling through Montenegro and stumbled upon this Gallery, which immediately captivated me. After our conversation, I was offered the chance to exhibit here, which I happily accepted,”
she stated.
The exhibit features photographs created over nearly a decade, with some pieces dating back nearly ten years, while others were captured this year in Durmitor, adding layers of personal and temporal depth to the project. Bjeliš, who holds a master’s degree in visual communications from the Design School in Zagreb, founded Studio Kanu in 2018 and has exhibited widely both domestically and internationally.
With accolades including the award for Best Film Poster at the SEECS Festival in Istanbul, Bjeliš currently resides and works in Oslo.
The “Afterlight” exhibit will remain open to the public until January 14, 2024. Art enthusiasts and the local community are encouraged to visit and experience this intimate exploration of human connection with nature.
The opening of Bjeliš’s exhibit not only enriches the cultural landscape of Cetinje but also serves as a reminder of the profound beauty found in the interplay between our identities and the environments we inhabit. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness the powerful narratives within her photography!
