A prison officer from Wrexham has successfully raised over £6,000 for the Shooting Star Cancer Support Charity following her participation in the London Marathon. Steffi Lakes, who is employed at HMP Berwyn, completed the marathon in April 2024, initially raising £2,800 for the charity dedicated to supporting cancer patients and their families.
The fundraising efforts did not stop there. Following her marathon run, the total amount raised increased significantly thanks to a donation of £1,377 from the Prison Services Charity Fund. Ms. Lakes, who is an active member of the fund’s committee, has also secured an additional £2,000 in donations, further bolstering the charity’s resources.
Support for Local Cancer Patients
The Shooting Star Cancer Support Charity provides essential services to cancer patients at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital and throughout the surrounding county borough. Ms. Lakes expressed her motivation for supporting the charity, highlighting the care it has provided not only to her friends and colleagues but also to prisoners receiving treatment.
“The support we have received from the charity has made a significant difference in the lives of many,” Ms. Lakes remarked. Her dedication to this cause reflects a broader commitment to community welfare and highlights the importance of local charities in providing emotional and practical support alongside NHS services.
The funds raised through Ms. Lakes’ efforts will be instrumental in helping the charity continue its vital work. According to Shooting Star, the contributions will directly support individuals and families affected by cancer, enhancing the services offered at the hospital.
Shooting Star Cancer Support Charity is known for its comprehensive approach to care, working closely with patients and their families across the region. By providing both practical assistance and emotional support, the charity plays a critical role in the healthcare landscape of North Wales.
As communities come together to support those in need, the achievements of individuals like Steffi Lakes serve as a powerful reminder of the impact that dedicated fundraising can have on local charities and the lives of those they serve.
