The UK has officially launched the Women in Tech Taskforce, aimed at tackling gender disparities within the technology sector. Spearheaded by Allison Kirkby, CEO of BT Group, and comprising 14 other influential women, the initiative responds to government findings indicating that the gender gap in tech costs the economy between £2 billion and £3.5 billion annually.
Addressing Systemic Barriers
The taskforce is designed to encourage women not only to enter the tech industry but also to remain in it once they do. Liz Kendall, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, emphasized the group’s mission to “break down the barriers that still hold too many people back.” She noted that the taskforce will collaborate with industry leaders to devise “practical solutions” aimed at fostering a more inclusive environment.
Currently, the gender imbalance in the tech sector is stark, with men holding a four-to-one advantage over women regarding computer science degrees. The government has warned that without intervention, it could take as long as 283 years to achieve gender equality in this field. The taskforce intends to advocate for the removal of systemic barriers that hinder women’s access to education, training, and career advancement opportunities.
Complementing Educational Initiatives
In addition to its efforts within the tech sector, the taskforce is expected to align with a new AI and digital skills curriculum being introduced in UK schools. Kendall stated that promoting women’s participation in technology can “unlock the innovation and growth our economy needs,” highlighting the potential for increased creativity and decision-making within the sector when more women are included.
The government has pointed to successful businesses led by women as exemplars of the positive impact this initiative could yield. Companies such as Ivee, Starling Bank, and Koru Kids serve as inspirations for what can be achieved through female leadership and innovation in the tech landscape.
